And before we're even done with 'Rise', we're gaining momentum for our first improvised album. We actually practice improvising, and are refining a technique of signaling group dynamics and chord changes on the fly. So, improv has become a big part of our weekly sessions, and we've wired the garage - ahem, studio - to record everything. (Ah, don't you love cheap hard drives with a lot of memory). I take the best jams, then edit them down leaving only the good bits, and voila... an improvised instrumental album starts to take form.
Meanwhile, RESISTOR is continuing to get better at improvising. We're getting more adept at our chord change visual aid (which is a large printout of a piano keyboard octave on the floor between myself and Fran. Fran and I point to that drawing with our feet, so we know how to improvise chords on the fly without yelling, "G!" "What, C?" "No, G!!!"), and we're in discussions about how to expand our foot pointing methods to include signals for major vs minor chords. We're also trying to figure out how to call out time sigature changes on the fly as well. We've been recording our "jams" recently, and some of them are turning out really well. So, it's conceivable that we'll eventually merge progressive rock with its many time signature and chord changes, with the free-flowing world of jam bands, where every time we turn on our amps the music turns out different.
