Twilight in India It's twilight and the lights are on in India You can see the clouds reflect them in the sky And you are staring high out the corner of your mind's eye Somehow it is morning in America It seems like more than half-a-world away And somewhere, someone's praying It's summer, but the springtime song has ended, in fact, more than half-a-year ago And nowhere is familiar soil And no one is the one you know so Perhaps you should adjust your medication It seems the green-and-white ones, too, have failed Or maybe it's because you're jailed Maybe it's because you're nailed down... lovingly And the caravan moves on its way Single file and blinders on No oasis far in front or behind No path but the trail well-charted Many more have surely wound up dead who have strayed But who has stayed has only wound up led And you, my friend, You don't belong here Your mind and your heart are too free But another twilight's fading in India And you are still here Nailed down lovingly Back to top Challenging I bring a challenge to your table so reply if you are able - here on this mortal plane Define the point of disappointment for the one who had anointed - so much trust unto your name or will you remain Silent? The mystics say you gave us fables sensing how we’d be unable - to grasp your lofty ways Myself, I find such means abusive Who stays aloof and so elusive when a child cries out, “save me?” But still you remain Always silent through the mists of time, while we wait in hope of revelation As these broken days keep marching by I lose sight of reconciliation So I guess we must be all alone, for no hand is reaching out to guide us And we’ll stumble through the great unknown, on our own, if you won’t walk beside us let it be Revealed I bring a challenge to your altar If your powers never falter - and you’re so kind and can see everything How do you justify these conditions? Is it by some ethereal wisdom - which holds no relevance to human beings While you would seem Always silent through the mists of time, while we wait in hope of revelation As these broken days keep marching by I lose sight of reconciliation So I guess we must be all alone, for no hand is reaching out to guide us And we’ll stumble through the great unknown, on our own, if you won’t walk beside us let it be Revealed -=- As I hear my hearbeat counting my diminishing of days I can feel more questions mounting The passing years only thicken the haze As a child I felt amazement at the clockwork of the world But on your watch I hit the pavement watched your works into entropy hurled And old father time won’t leave me alone silently your seeds, we, have grown Once I thought about life’s dangers from a tower high above But the whole perspective changes when life grinds down the one that you love and old father time won’t leave me alone silently your seeds, we, have grown So if someday my breathing ceases and I chance to ascend to finally end my straining to you I will clutch these days – ten thousand jagged pieces and you’ll have some explaining to do -=- I’m raising Occam’s razor skyward to divorce my wish from my words - help unhinge hypocrisy Sever this superstitious thinking I’m adrift and I am sinking in the sea, reality So will you still be Always silent through the mists of time, while we wait in hope of revelation As these broken days keep marching by I lose sight of reconciliation So I guess we must be all alone, for no hand is reaching out to guide us And we’ll stumble through the great unknown, on our own, if you won’t walk beside us let it be Revealed Back to top The Ocean What song is there to sing? Whenever I’m without I can’t breathe The air escapes from me My voice is muted softly disappearing Every melody in the ocean Joins a symphony Resonating waves that carry me But if you’re gone I’m lost at sea What song is there for me if it must play without your harmony? what calls a song to rise if it won’t be reflected in your eyes? Every melody in the ocean Joins a symphony Resonating waves that carry me But if you’re gone I’m lost at sea Turbulent, uneasy is this passage Exodus unwilling to unknown Every step an improvised performance Unprepared to take this stage alone From a distance you could swear I’m flying as I dangle from a string Solitary in the spotlight of the great dark opera Sound and fury – sound and fury – sound and fury signifying Every melody in the ocean Joins a symphony Resonating waves that carry me But if you’re gone I’m lost at sea What song is there to sing Whenever I’m without I can’t breathe The air escapes from me My voice is muted softly disappearing Back to top Bluebird (Instrumental) Back to top Fighting Gravity Put the pen to the page, and try to erase what you know ‘cause the past year has changed you. Your new words betray you, Hey, how did you think it would go? Were you smarter than everyone else? Describing the fall as you took it Protecting your fragile ideals like a jar full of fireflies who’d die if you shook it Now the ground starts to close, and impact can’t be far away When the glass jar explodes what do you think you might say? Are you stronger than even your self? And can you remain at a distance even when forced to replay all the days your nerves tingled and you didn’t listen? And now the curtain starts to fall Finding you’re human after all You thought you’d found one high to trust; a bubble the world couldn’t bust But you were just fighting gravity Now the poet hits the stage trying to face all his fears He delivers his lines, but inside he's wondering "Where do I go from here?" Well, everything comes to an end. Brace, for the impact is painful Glass shards go scattering, fireflies escaping to rise with the birds and the angels And the curtain starts to fall Finding you’re human after all You thought you’d found one high to trust; a bubble the world couldn’t bust But you were just fighting gravity Back to top The Path to Alhambra (Instrumental) Back to top Dissolve This could be the end The closing of the journey A lifetime just dissolving into air So how could I pretend after all the learning? Life has taught me, deftly, to beware Prepare for this Welcome to the edge The tip of no returning A lifetime just dissolving into air I become what’s left when dreams get lost Just hanging out to count the cost in twilight of evaporating day Weary from these lessons learned, and leery of the tale’s next turn Must every story end the same sad way? Always? This could be the thread where everything unravels I’m picking at it ‘til the yarn is sore A novel in the window with a shiny title promising escape Though everything is looking great there’s nothing left in store I become what’s left when dreams get lost Just hanging out to count the cost in twilight of evaporating day Weary from these lessons learned, and leery of the tale’s next turn Must every story end the same sad way? Always? Soul Missing Left to mourn the loss Here Nothing Just this tiny cross Life Taken Harsh Reality Hope Beaten Driven out of me Turn the final page A novel no one’s reading A lifetime just dissolving into air I've become what’s left when dreams get lost Just hanging out to count the cost in twilight of evaporating day Weary from these lessons learned, and leery of the tale’s next turn Must every story end the same sad way? Always? Back to top Reflecting Pond Here I feel arising the curse of the great beyond Focus my eyes and stare, paralyzed, at the lethal reflecting pond And black water starts to churn on the dusk of days we learn We're expendable The moment we're born we are sacred Little gods of our own design But every new day leads us further away until one day we finally find That we're lost beyond repair And we're small beyond compare And expendable "Arise and go home" "Rise and go home" "Rise and go home, frail child" See the reflecting surface shining back the stars Lost in regret we can forget just who we are In time Standing on shoulders of giants lifted my mind to the clouds Now feeling the weight of such great expectations I see my reflection and bow To the depths I must descend just to find my own true end Back to topBack to top Back to 'Challenging Gravity' page Back to Steve Unruh Home
