Happy 2016! I'm in the midst of creating some really wonderful music; what a privilege and joy to be involved in such inspiring stuff. Here's what's up with my three main bands:
- The Samurai of Prog - Our new double album, 'Lost and Found', is comprised of lost prog masterpieces from the 70s, which we've resurrected and re-worked in collaboration with the original artists. Often source material was available only as a lo-fi mono tape recording, so it felt a bit musicological in the early stages. To be honest, I wasn't 100% sure about this idea when Marco presented it, but it just shows, what do I know! We have completed all recording, and Kimmo is in the final stages of mixing the album. I almost can't believe my ears when I hear what we've accomplished - and I can't wait for y'all to hear it. It's chock full of strong melodies, lush instrumentation, tricky time signatures, and epics to the Nth degree. And it's also really fun! The next step is the cover, then off to manufacture. It should be available Spring 2016.
- Resistor - our most ambitious album, 'Underground', is making great strides. It's taking a lot longer than expected, but it's also becoming bigger and better than we had imagined. The new recording studio, Fran's insistence on meticulous mic placement, Rob's new bass, a few new mics, the new drumheads, and my new mixing tools are really paying off. We can hear ourselves much better when we write and practice, and the recorded audio is beautifully clear and full. Such a pleasure to mix when you're not trying to "fix" anything! We're also playing better every year, so I guess us old dogs can still learn new tricks. (I suppose when your band practices every week for 8 years, you eventually get mighty good!) Nine of the ten songs are done and mixed except for a few backing vocals. Track 10 (the epic) is getting underway.
- UPF - Mark and Cheryl Trueack stayed with us for a week in October '15, and we had a wonderful time. We forged strong friendships, wrote a song together (I could write a paper on all the insights I'm picking up from him), and formed a plan for my work regarding UPF's upcoming double album, 'Planetary Overload'. UPF will become the primary focus for my late-night studio work during 2016. I have a Terabyte hard drive of material to work on, so the project is huge... and an inspiring challenge, with a very important message behind the music (climate change awareness). The plan is to make the album during 2016, and promote and tour in 2017.
- Resistor is now on Facebook. You can 'Like' us here, though you know I'm terribly lax about updates do don't expect much activity :).
